History

Ames Golf & Country Club was formed in 1911. The original Club, a nine-hole golf course with a clubhouse and swimming pool, was located south of Ames, Iowa. In 1971 land was purchased and a new golf course built at the present location, north of Ames.

The grand opening of our new facility at the present location was held on Labor Day 1974. The Club consists of 164 acres, including a well-manicured golf course, a heated pool, and two tennis courts. The pool facilities are available Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The renowned Donald Sechrest of Tulsa, Oklahoma, designed the 18-hole, 114-acre course in 1971. The golf course boasts lush fairways, tees and well-manicured greens irrigated and surrounded by a few small, well-positioned lakes. Also included are an ample Practice and Teaching facility and a large Practice Green.

Fairway Yardage Markers

Well as many of you who have made your way around the golf course this spring have noticed we have new yardage markers in our fairways.  The first stage of these is the new black and white striped 150 yard pole and yellow and white 250 yard pole; these match the design of our flag sticks and practice green markers.  These markers add a great deal to the golf course as each are placed in the absolute center of each fairway and can be seen from the tee grounds, this aids possible new members, tournaments and you seeing where to place your drive from the tee.  One of the things that we heard many comments on last year was the fairway yardage posts were on the edge of the fairway and didn't give golfers a good indication from the other side of the fairway for yardage or drive placement.

With fairway yardage markers there are several different avenues to go with, one is the flexible rubber sticks that you have had for many years prior to 2010, the yardage posts like last year and then what we have in store for you in 2011.  Each of these have some trade-offs, both aesthetically and also what fits for your golf game, hopefully you will find these as a better replacement for our yardage posts from 2010!

Our second stage to the 150 and 250 poles will be yardage stones placed at the 100 and 200 yardages in the center of the fairway.  These white stones will be etched and painted for the yardages courtesy of Ty Stewart; they will be installed on our Member Work day on Saturday April 9th.

Happy Golfing!

Reel and Bedknife Grinding

As most home owners know, the blades on your mower need to be shappened several times during the growing season, just as those are, we also have that process but on a much larger scale.  With the reel style of mowing (Our Greens, Tee and Fairway Mowers) you have several other factors to deal with, for a reel that isnt absolutely sharp and true every single day adds substantual stress on the grassplant.  Below are photos illistrating part of the process on grinding, but before that can even begin several hours must be spent on each reel getting it ready for the season.  This would include going through all bearings (front and back rollers) reel bearings, grease zerks and replace any other damaged components along with a brand new bedknife.  Here at AGCC we have 6 greens reels, 3 tee reels and 15 fairway reels that we will be going through.  Once all pieces have been replaced the grinding commences, to which we use the Bernhard grinders at Veenker Memorial Golf Course.  This process of grinding happens 3-4 times a year but we also do regular maintenance on the reels before each and every mow to ensure a perfect cut.

Hopefully this has givin you all a better understanding on the perfection that it requires to do just a simple job as mowing greens.
